Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington was a British military and political leader in the middle and late 18th centuries. He served as the "First Duke" of Wellington, the premier general of the British Army, for two periods in the early 1800s. During his first administration (1808–1828), he was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and held other offices such as Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for the Colonies. After a long battle with illness, he died on 29 August 1852 at age 71, one day before Queen Victoria ascended to the throne.
